How To Make Any Resolution Stick

Today is the day millions of people around the world will be making New Year’s Resolutions.  Most will be last a few days, maybe a week, and a few rare will last a month.  However, very few actually make a lasting impression.  Why is that?? Why do we go through the trouble of self-examination, decide what we don’t like about our current life, and decide to make a change, but do little to actually accomplish that goal.  I always thought it was those with stronger will power that could make the actually change, or those who had a better support group around them could do it.  Which I think all those things help, however, I had an “ah-ah” moment the other day when I was reading a parenting book.  Yes, parenting seems to relate to all aspects of our life!!  Weird how that happens!

Anyways, the book, Loving Your Kids On Purpose, was talking about the importance of having a heart relationship with your children.  Where you care so much about how your decision will effect their heart, and they care so much about how their actions will effect your heart.  It really is an eye opening concept, that your hearts are connected and you care so much about each other that you make decisions that honor that relationship.  The book talks about how God desires that same relationship with Him.  That we are connected to His heart and our decisions are made out of that connection.

That’s when the light bulb went on!! It matters how our hearts are connected to the choices we make! When we make a resolution, are we making that resolution out of guilt or self image.  Or, are we making that resolution because we are connected to our Father’s heart and His heart is compelling us to make a change!  God cares about us! He cares about our physical health, spiritual health, mental health, relationship health, financial health, etc.  You name it, He cares about it!

In my own health journey, I can see this heart connection at work. I always thought that I ate fairly healthy and that I was doing a good job taking care of the my body.  See, I believe that it is important to take care of our bodies because we are God’s temple.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20  Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

I thought I was doing a good job, but as I got older I had gained some unwanted weight and my biggest problem was that I was exhausted all the time.  I had no energy to do anything. I lived for a nap! So, I decided to start cutting calories and running.  However, I didn’t see any results and quickly fell off the bandwagon.  The reason I decided to make a change was for my own self image and desires.  I thought I was eating fairly well, I just had to tighten the reigns a bit, so I had no disconnect with my Father’s heart.

However, that all changed in August of 2013.  I had picked up a book called Maximized Living Nutrition Plans.  In that book, I learned so much about our food. How sugar effects the body, how processed foods effect the body, how a lack of nutrition is stealing my energy, etc.  My eyes were open to the truth that even though I cooked our meals at home, they were far from healthy.  In reality, I wasn’t actually taking care of my body like I thought I was.  For the first time, my heart hurt over the condition of my health.  Not out of guilt or condemnation, but out of my love for God and our heart connection.  I wanted to honor God through honoring my body and I realized I was not doing that.  September 2013 our family changed our diet and we have never looked back!  It1913737_10153316218136699_8469736932350339264_n didn’t take an accountability group to keep us motivated, it didn’t take a strong will, all it took was a heart connection with the Father!! In the health world, you will hear many times that it is a lifestyle not a diet and it is so true.  Yes, we lost weight and I can happily say I am a recovered napper! However, we will keep eating health and using super foods to nourish our body, not because we are afraid to gain weight, but because we want to nourish our bodies and honor the temple of God!

I believe this heart connection with God is so key to every resolution you make.  Tonight, as you count down to a New Year and you think of all the things to come, ask yourself what does God feel about the next year and what actions should I take that would honor our heart relationship!

Blessing to you and your family!!

Christmas Giveaway Week 2: Peace and Joy!!

With Christmas season in full swing, we can often find ourselves caught up in gift buying and party planning that we put ourselves on the back burner.  To get it all done we are burning the candle at both ends!!  We often find ourselves in a state of worry over getting everything done and trying to make everything perfect!  When the Christmas season is over, we wonder where it went!  We never take time to enjoy the season or even the reason for the season!! So for this weeks giveaway, I wanted to give you something that nourished your soul!

About a month ago, I spoke at a woman’s retreat and on Saturday morning I felt God lead me to speak about anxiety, worry, and, about our rights as children of God.  I thought, this teaching would be a perfect gift to you this Christmas!! I was able to record my teaching on my phone while I spoke, so sound quality is not the greatest.  However, the message is loud and clear and I pray that this recording helps restore the Peace and Joy that God has given you!!

Scandinavian Thumbprint Cookies-Yum!!

On Sunday, after I created the 5 clean cookie giveaway it got me in the cookie mood!!  So, on Monday my daughter, Mercy, and I decided to make a batch of Scandinavian Thumbprint Cookies!  They were a hit!! In fact, I wanted to take a pic to post on here, but they were gone too fast!!  With 5 kiddos, they don’t last long!!

We followed the recipe almost to a T, however, I didn’t have applesauce, so I added 2 eggs instead. Since, we took out the applesauce that adds a little bit of sweetness we also added 1 dropper of liquid stevia.  One thing, that would be nice to add on to it is a glaze when it gets out of the oven.  I am still working on that, if anyone has a clean recipe for almond glaze let me know!

Scandinavian Thumbprint Cookies

  1. Add to bowl
  • 1/4 cup coconut flour, liquid
  • 3Tbsp honey
  • 1/4 apple sauce
  • 1Tbsp chia seed meal (I grind my own seeds in a coffee grinder or miller 1tbsp meal is equal to about 1/2 tbsp seeds)
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla

2. Beat with electric mixer

3. Add

  • 1/3 arrowroot flour
  • 1/3 cup almond meal
  • 1/3 cup coconut flour

4.Beat with mixer

5.Roll into little balls and place on parchement paper lined cookie sheets

6.Use your fingers to create an indentation and fill with raspberry or strawberry jam.  Make sure you use one with no added sugar or artificial sugar.

7. Bake at 350 degrees for about 15 mins

Makes 15-20 cookies
